Drake Maye made his New England Patriots debut in the final moments of a 24-3 loss to the New York Jets on Thursday.

The third overall pick played little but made the most of his minutes. He completed four of his eight passes for 22 yards while gaining 12 yards on two carries, including one for 11 yards.

Maye’s debut came as starter Jacoby Brissett struggled, throwing for just 98 yards in the blowout loss.

After the game, head coach Jerod Mayo was unsure of Brissett’s status as QB1 and indicated the staff would consider at least one quarterback change:

Would Jerod Mayo consider a QB change with the Patriots? “I don’t know. We talk about it every week, you’re competing for a job. We’ll get together as a coaching staff.”

Although Patriots fans haven’t seen much of Maye so far, they’re ready for New England to promote him to QB1.

It’s been a less-than-ideal start to the year for Brissett, who has just 270 passing yards and one touchdown on a 58.8 completion percentage through three games.

With fans ready to see Maye start for the Patriots, New England’s Week 4 game against the San Francisco 49ers might be an inopportune time to give him his first start.

The Patriots’ offensive line has struggled this year, allowing 11 sacks in three games, including seven on Thursday. Maye has been part of just one drive and has been sacked twice. If Maye starts against the 49ers next week, he’ll likely suffer a handful of sacks against a solid defensive line, which isn’t an ideal situation for a rookie quarterback.

On the other hand, putting Maye at center sooner rather than later might be best for his development, and that could influence Mayo’s decision.
