Queen Margrethe of Denmark, who abdicated this year, hospitalized after fall

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, who stunned the country when she abdicated earlier this year, has been admitted to hospital after a fall at her home, Danish media reported on Thursday.

According to reports, she was not seriously injured.

Margrethe, 84, was admitted to the Danish capital’s university hospital for observation on Wednesday evening after a fall at Fredensborg Castle, north of Copenhagen, the royal household told Danish media.

“Given the circumstances, the Queen is doing well but has been admitted for observation at this time,” communications chief Lene Balleby said. The royal family has not commented further.

Her son, King Frederick X, told reporters he had spoken to her and that she was “in good hands.”

“We take things day by day. The doctors decide,” Frederik said as he arrived at the Danish capital’s city hall to attend celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of the Copenhagen Royal Chapel Choir.

Margrethe was due to attend an event marking the 75th anniversary of Aarhus University’s archaeology department on Friday, but her appearance was cancelled. Margrethe had studied prehistoric archaeology at the University of Copenhagen and had earlier said that if she had not been ruler of Denmark, she would have become an archaeologist.

In January, Queen Margrethe became the first Danish monarch to abdicate in nearly 900 years, handing the throne to her son.

She has always maintained throughout her 52-year reign that she would not abdicate, but back surgery and several illnesses have prevented her from undertaking as much as she could in the past.

“Time is doing its work,” she said, announcing her intention to abdicate in a New Year’s speech.
