Danny Boyle and co-writer Alex Garland return to the 28 Days Later franchise with a third film, set 28 Years Later.

The first installment in a new trilogy, Cillian Murphy reprises his role as Jim in the 2002 zombie apocalypse classic.

He will be joined by an impressive cast including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes and Jack O’Connell.

The biggest British blockbuster of 2025 wrapped production earlier this year, but Wired has now discovered that the film was shot on an iPhone 15 Pro Max with attached lenses, microphones, tripods and other accessories.

It’s not the first film to be shot on an iPhone, but with a budget of $75 million, it breaks the record for the most expensive film shot on a mobile phone.

This shouldn’t be too surprising given that Boyle shot 28 Days Later on eight lightweight Canon digital camcorders, which gave it a distinctive grainy look.

That was in standard definition of 480, which is lower than HD’s 720; meanwhile, the iPhone 15 Pro Max can shoot in 4K.

Either way, it looks like the director is trying to recapture something of that handmade feel of the original film and we can’t wait to see the results in the first trailer.

28 Years Later will be released in theaters on June 20, 2025.
