Suspect in knife attack on Sterling Heights man, 76, arrested

A man was arrested Tuesday after allegedly using a knife to attack another man walking in his Sterling Heights neighborhood, police said.

Officials said the suspect is being held in the Macomb County Jail as he awaits arraignment.

According to a preliminary investigation, a 76-year-old Sterling Heights resident was walking on Riverland Road east of Van Dyke Avenue and north of Utica Road around 9 a.m. Tuesday when he was attacked.

Police said that before the unprovoked attack, the suspect had been walking behind the victim and making “strange statements” to him. Investigators reported the attacker used a knife, but the victim was able to fight him off.

Officers were called, arrived within minutes and found the suspect, authorities said. They arrested him after a short foot chase, police said.

The victim, who was injured in the attack, was taken to a hospital.

The incident follows other knife-related incidents in southeastern Michigan, including one fatal stabbing in Taylor last month.
