Two Post Office branches in Liverpool are among more than 100 across the country at risk of possible closures. The Post Office is looking to transfer direct ownership of 115 Crown Post Offices within its network of 11,500 branches, which could see them transferred to retail partners or postal workers, or possibly closed.

Breckweg and Old Swan Post offices are at risk, along with 40 in London, just over a third of the remaining Crown Post Offices. A further nine are in Greater Manchester and five in Wales.

That is approximately 1,000 employees active across all branches and the Post Office also confirmed that hundreds of other roles at its head office are under threat as it looks to streamline back-office operations.

Post Office chairman Nigel Railton said the shake-up will offer a “new deal for postal workers” by increasing their share of turnover and giving them more control over running the business, as it looks like Horizon IT scandal behind him. hundreds of sub-postmasters wrongly convicted.

The plans, which rely on government funding, would see average branch salaries doubled by 2030, with £120 million in additional salaries by the end of the first year. In an announcement to postal workers and staff on Wednesday, Mr Railton said: “The Post Office has a 360-year history of public service, and today we want to safeguard that service for the future by learning from past mistakes and moving forward for the sake of the future. of all postmasters.

“We can and will restore pride in working for a company with a legacy of service, rather than one of scandal.” He added that the overhaul also marks “a new phase of partnership, in which we will strengthen the voice of postmasters in the day-to-day management and operations of the company, so that they are represented from the front line to the boardroom”.

It follows a strategic review launched by Mr Railton in May, but is dependent on funding talks with the US government governmentwhich the post office said were “positive and ongoing.” It is also said that the government has been consulted on the possibility of transferring ownership of the network to thousands of sub-postmasters across the country.

The 115 branches at risk are Crown Post Offices in cities and staffed by post office workers. They are the only remaining branches directly owned by the Post Office, down from almost 400 in 2010.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) called on the post office to halt the plans and the government to intervene. Dave Ward, general secretary of the CWU, said: “It is as tone-deaf as it is immoral for the company to announce the closure of hundreds of post offices on the heels of the Horizon scandal. CWU members are victims of the Horizon scandal – and for them to now fear for their jobs in the run-up to Christmas is yet another vicious attack.”

The post office emphasized that it wants to franchise the branches or transfer ownership to other parties, such as its network of retail partners. Retailers such as WH Smith, TescoMorrisons and the Co-Op operate approximately 2,000 post offices across the country.

The remainder of the network – approximately 9,000 post offices – is managed by independent postmasters. As part of the transformation, the Post Office is also establishing a new Postmaster Panel to increase support and training, and an Advisory Council “to ensure the interests of postmasters remain paramount”.

A spokesperson for the Department for Business and Trade said: “Post offices are an integral part of the communities they serve and the services they provide to local people. The Government is actively engaging with Nigel Railton about his plans to put postal workers at the heart of the organization and strengthen the post office network for the long-term future.”

There is still a public investigation into the Horizon IT scandal, which involved hundreds of subpostmasters who were wrongly convicted of theft after the company’s flawed accounting system made it appear as if money was missing from their branches.
