Petaluma man arrested on suspicion of assault after stabbing

A Petaluma man was arrested Monday night on suspicion of assaulting another man with a knife, Petaluma police said in a community message Tuesday night.

Police were dispatched to Hopper Street around 9:53 p.m. Monday after reports of two men fighting in the area.

After police arrived on scene, they learned that a man had stabbed the victim “multiple times” and that the suspect had attempted to dispose of the knife, which was later recovered in front of the Mary Isaak Center at 900 Hopper Street.

“The victim was transported to hospital for emergency surgery due to the severity of his injuries,” police said in a message to the community. As of Tuesday morning, the victim was in stable condition.

The suspect was identified as Javier Ortega, 48, who officers arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and outstanding arrest warrants.

As of Friday, Ortega was not being held in the Sonoma County Jail.
