Christmas special cast members Gavin and Stacey bid farewell to Barry

Gavin and Stacey say goodbye to Barry after 17 years

At the end of the day, when all is said and done…it’s over.

The Gavin and Stacey cast said their final goodbyes to Barry as they wrapped filming there this week.

Crowds gathered, rain or shine, in the Vale of Glamorgan town to watch the filming of the grand finale of the hit BBC comedy, which will air on Christmas Day.

The stars of the series, including co-writers Ruth Jones and James Corden, as well as Welsh favourites Joanna Page and Rob Brydon, interacted with local residents – but were determined not to reveal anything about the plot.

Fans waited five years to see new material from the series, which spanned three seasons and a Christmas special, and was left on a cliffhanger in 2019.

Much of the series, even some scenes set in England, have been filmed in South Wales over the years and this was no different for the latest instalment.

Locations over the years have included Nessa’s slot machines and Marco’s cafe in Barry Island, the old Oceana nightclub in Cardiff, Pam and Mick’s house in Dinas Powys and Dave’s caravan in Rhoose.

But the cast confirmed that they have now finished Trinity Street and will be leaving Barry to finish the episode.

The actors took to the streets to say goodbye to the audience, with Jones thanking them for being “so patient”.

“You didn’t see anything because we were inside, which shows you are true committed fans of the show and we hope you won’t be disappointed on Christmas Day when all is revealed,” she said.

“This is now our goodbye to Barry and Trinity Street, so you won’t see us here anymore, but we’ve had a wonderful 17 years, it’s been fantastic.”

James Corden added: “Thank you very much everyone, see you soon.”

As the sun set in the background, the cast took their bows and walked down the show’s famous hill one last time to a chorus of cheers.
