Homes left without gas after main fire

Hundreds of homes remain without gas after a main caught fire.

Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said the water main on Lowndes Way, Winslow, started at around 6.20pm BST on Wednesday and destroyed a nearby digger.

Gas distribution company SGN said its “progress has been slower than we had hoped” after water entered gas pipes during the incident and while they worked to remove it they had to cut off gas supplies to around 800 properties.

In an update released Friday evening, the company said it had so far removed more than 30,000 gallons of water from the Winslow system and that efforts would continue Saturday.

SGN said an investigation was underway but it was “too early to know what caused the incident”.

He said: “In many properties water has leaked into service pipes and individual meters.”

Around 382 properties remain without gas, but the supplier has reiterated its warning to residents not to try to restore their gas supply themselves as this could cause water to enter appliances and damage them.

A customer information center will be set up at Winslow Public Hall starting at 9 a.m., he said.

SGN added that compensation will be paid to those affected by the issue. A further update is expected later Saturday.
