Traffic limited as crews work at the western Topeka intersection

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Traffic is light at a busy west Topeka intersection this week as crews make street repairs on a project expected to continue into spring 2025.

Work was scheduled to begin Tuesday at the intersection of SW 6th and MacVicar Avenue.

City officials said the concrete pavement at the intersection will be reconstructed.

To keep the intersection open to traffic, city officials said, construction work will be done in phases throughout the construction project.

However, some turns are not allowed during certain phases of construction, city officials added.

During the first phase, work will take place in the northeast quadrant of the intersection.

• Traffic on SW 6th will be reduced to one lane in each direction in the eastbound lanes.

• Eastbound traffic on SW 6th will not be allowed to turn left onto northbound MacVicar Avenue.

• Westbound traffic on SW 6th Avenue will not be allowed to turn right onto northbound MacVicar Ave.

• Northbound traffic on SW MacVicar Avenue will not be allowed to travel north on 6th Avenue.

· Southbound traffic on SW MacVicar Avenue may not turn left onto eastbound 6th Ave.

City officials are reminding motorists that it is illegal to cut through private property to travel through the work zone.

Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and use alternate routes to avoid the area if possible.

The first phase is expected to last until December 2, weather permitting.

Updates will be provided before subsequent phases are initiated.

The entire project is expected to be completed in the spring of 2025.
