Progress continues on the I-565 widening project

MADISON, Ala. (WAF) – Crews continue to work on adding a third lane in each direction from west of County Line Road to east of Wall Triana Highway. This project is intended to help alleviate traffic congestion during peak hours.

Despite the backups, transportation officials said the project is going smoothly and there are no delays.

Construction workers installed concrete barriers along I-565 to allow them to work in the grassy medians. ALDOT’s Seth Burkett said more and more concrete barriers will be installed as the project progresses.

Right now, construction crews are focused on grading and working on installing drainage in these medians.

Burkett said motorists shouldn’t expect many major changes to this project anytime soon.

“This will be a very long project time-wise, so there will be a lot of work going on on the centerline,” Burkett said. “I’m not aware of anything happening in the near future that will cause any kind of change.”

Burkett said the construction process has gone a little faster than expected due to the dry weather.

Road construction isn’t the only thing crews have been working on.

Crews began installing giant message boards between County Line and Greenbrier Road Tuesday evening. Those signs inform people about things like crashes and construction delays.

Burkett said the signs are placed in areas where most people will see them.

“We try to place them strategically because there are key locations where motorists could be most affected by an accident on the roadway,” Burkett said. “There are places where we are seeing major backups happening.”

Another major part of the project involves widening two bridges in the area. Burkett said crews could start the bridge widening project next month.

The entire project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2026.
