The Detroit Lions came out of their Week 3 showdown against the Arizona Cardinals with several significant injuries.

Among those who left Arizona due to illness were Sam LaPorta, Alim McNeill, Derrick Barnes, Brian Branch and Marcus Davenport.

Coach Dan Campbell has confirmed Davenport’s injury is season-ending after reports the situation was evolving into that following initial tests.

“Davenport will be out, it looks like it’s the end of the season,” Campbell said. “I’m still gathering other opinions on that.”

The Lions could consider several options on the defensive line to replace Davenport. Among them are Josh Paschal, who Campbell said should play a bigger role, defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike or practice squad veteran Pat O’Connor.

Barnes took a low block from Cardinals offensive tackle Paris Johnson Jr. and was carted to the locker room after reaching the sideline under his own power. Branch, meanwhile, left the game after a helmet-to-helmet collision with tight end Trey McBride.

On Monday, Campbell said Barnes would be out “for a significant period of time” with a knee injury, but others, including McNeill, Branch and LaPorta, were listed as day-to-day. Branch also remains in concussion protocol.

With Barnes sidelined and Alex Anzalone already out with a concussion, the Lions relied on Malcolm Rodriguez, Jalen Reeves-Maybin and Ben Niemann.

“We have a lot of depth, we have confidence in all of those guys,” Campbell said. “It hurts, it’s going to hurt to lose Barnes. Barnes is playing at a high level, but if it’s going to happen in any room, the linebacker room gives you confidence because all of those guys can play. We have a lot of confidence in those guys.”

The Lions still don’t know if Barnes will eventually be placed on injured reserve with a designation to return at some point this season.

“We don’t know yet, we’re still getting medical advice,” Campbell said. “What we know right now is he’s going to be out for a while. We know that, and then once we get that advice, it’s just a matter of how long it’s going to be. It’s the knee, so is he going to need anything other than healing on one of the ligaments? And can that heal? Can those ligaments heal and he’ll be fine, it just takes time? We know he’s going to be out for a while while the knee heals. And once it heals, is he going to need surgery?”

LaPorta, meanwhile, suffered a low ankle sprain after being crushed by Budda Baker on a block. He returned in the second half and was in and out of the lineup.

Despite the significant losses to injuries, the Lions remain pleased with the depth of their roster and the practice squad to move forward and contribute. Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes have built depth with the goal of having options ready to go in case of injuries like the ones the team is currently facing.
