New York Man Convicted of Drugged Killing of Woman, Fleeing

A Brooklyn man who killed a Westchester County woman in a hit-and-run while high on drugs last year — and was arrested after leaving his license plate at the scene — is headed to prison.

Antonio Robles Sanchez, 43, was only supposed to face four years in prison, but he is now serving two to six years after telling a judge he lacked remorse, News12 reported.

“The victim was a beloved figure in the Greenburgh community and her life was made meaningless when the defendant chose to get behind the wheel of her car and drive while intoxicated,” Westchester County District Attorney Mimi Rocah said in a statement Monday.

“We hope that these prosecutions and convictions will help (Stephanie) Kovourias’ loved ones begin the process of healing from this tragedy,” the statement said.

Prosecutors said Sanchez struck and killed Kovourias, 65, in Hartsdale on Aug. 26, 2023, shortly after a Scarsdale police officer questioned him for a minor fender-bender but let him off with a warning.

The prosecutor’s office said Sanchez left the scene after hitting Kovourias, but police recovered the license plate of his Dodge Ram at the intersection and traced it to Sanchez, who was found stopped in traffic in White Plains.

Prosecutors said Sanchez was also under the influence of Xanax when officers arrested him.

Blood tests revealed he had taken cocaine the night before the crash and was also under the influence of Klonopin, according to lohud.com.

He was arrested and pleaded guilty on August 1 to charges of involuntary manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, leaving the scene of an incident and drug-impaired driving.

The deal initially called for a sentence of no more than four years, but Westchester Judge George Fufidio was so annoyed by Sanchez’s lack of remorse that he gave him a harsher sentence this week, lohud.com reported.
