BYU Kennedy Center Promotes International Experiential Learning Through Study Abroad Fair

The David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies at Brigham Young University hosted a study abroad fair on September 19, teaching students about experiential learning opportunities.

With more than 100 international experiences and more than 2,000 students study abroad each year, BYU has one of the 20 largest study abroad programs in the United States, according to BYU facts and figures.

These study abroad, internship, direct enrollment and field school experiences are offered in more than 60 countries across Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas and Oceania, helping students enhance their learning while at BYU.

The programs are offered year-round and teach students a variety of subjects ranging from art and culture to engineering, marketing, languages ​​and more. More information about the available subjects and programs can be found on the website Kennedy Center Website.

Patricia Baialuna de AndradeAssistant Professor of Luso-Brazilian Literature and Culture, is the Director of the Faculty of Internships in Brazil The internships will take place in the summer of 2025. She said the internships are organized in partnership with the University of São Paulo, offering internships to students from all majors. However, students must be fluent in Portuguese to participate.

Baialuna de Andrade said the interns work 20 hours a week with faculty and staff at the university’s Institute of Brazilian Studies, cataloging artwork, restoring documents, assisting librarians and more.

“São Paulo is a huge city that offers a multitude of cultural opportunities. There won’t be a single day without doing something,” she said. “Your schedule will be filled with so many interesting things to see, visit and taste, and it’s a very culturally enriching opportunity.”

Amy Eastonassociate professor of ancient writings, is a member of the faculty in charge of the Study Abroad at BYU London Centre which will take place in winter 2025. She said the London Centre is an excellent opportunity for students to meet general education requirements, such as global and cultural awareness, religion, humanities and civilisation credits.

“London, in particular, is the best-kept secret on how to pass the general exams in a really enjoyable and immersive way,” Easton said.

Dinah Grantham, a BYU anthropology student, taught fair attendees Field School Experience in Korea which will be offered in spring-summer 2025. This program allows students to choose their own research projects to study and research Korean culture for two months.

Students do not need to be fluent in Korean to participate in the experiment, but Grantham said participants must take a Korean language course. While the program covers two anthropology courses, students do not need to have a bachelor’s degree in anthropology to participate.

“You’re not in a classroom every day,” Grantham said of the field school experience. “We have classes once a week, but the rest of the time we have more opportunities to explore the country and what we find interesting.”
