England vs Australia prediction

World champions Australia showed their ruthlessness in the opening two ODIs against England and are favourites to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series at Chester-le-Street.

The autumn weather may not be to Australians’ taste, although the forecast for Tuesday looks a little more promising than for the rest of the week.

However, there is a gulf in class and experience between the 2023 World Cup winners, who are chasing a 15th consecutive ODI victory, and an England side who have lost ten of their last 14 internationals in the 50-over format.

England, under stand-in captain Harry Brook, had their moments of glory in the first two games, reaching 213-2 at Trent Bridge before collapsing to 315 all out and reducing the Australians to 221-9 at Headingley on Saturday.

Alex Carey’s excellent 74 took Australia to a total of 270 at Leeds but England still traded at 1-3 in the early stages of the chase before collapsing from 26-0 down to 65-5.

Wicketkeeper Carey was replaced by Josh Inglis after just one game of last year’s World Cup campaign, demonstrating the strength of Australia’s ODI side, and England are 7-5 to keep the series alive with victory at the Riverside Ground.

Local hero Matthew Potts took 3-58 and 9-68 for Durham in this month’s County Championship win over Lancashire and he deserves to be backed as England’s best bowler.

Potts dismissed Australia captain Mitchell Marsh in the first ODI and removed Steve Smith with a lovely inswinger at Headingley, where he finished with 2-30 from seven overs.

Ben Duckett has a key role to play in a struggling England batting unit. The Test opener has enjoyed his first two ODIs at the top of the order, scoring 95 at Trent Bridge and 32 from 25 balls at Headingley, where Aaron Hardie took a smart one-handed catch off his own bowling to get rid of him.

Prior to this series, Duckett’s last ODI innings was 71 against the West Indies in Bridgetown in December 2023 and his two previous one-day appearances at home produced scores of 48 from 49 balls and 107 not out from just 78 deliveries against Ireland.
