Cancer-causing chemicals found in food packaging

Breast cancer Breast cancer kills millions of people every year, and many cases and deaths go unreported. Among the many factors that trigger breast cancer growth, one of them is the environment.
According to a new study published in the journal Frontiers in Toxicology, 189 of the potential causes of breast cancer carcinogens were found in food contact materials which are mainly used in packaging. This includes PFAS, bisphenols And phthalates.
The researchers found that humans are exposed to at least 76 carcinogens through their diet. “Seventy-six potential mammary carcinogens were detected to migrate from FCMs sold in markets worldwide under realistic conditions of use. This implies that chronic exposure of the general population to potential mammary carcinogens from FCMs is the norm and highlights an important, but currently underappreciated, opportunity for prevention,” the authors said.

What are the materials in contact with food?

Food contact materials (FCMs) are substances and objects that come into direct or indirect contact with food during its production, processing, packaging, storage and consumption. These materials include items such as packaging, containers, utensils and equipment made of plastic, glass, metal, paper or coatings. Ensuring that these materials are safe is essential because they can transfer chemicals or compounds into food, which can impact its safety, quality or taste. Chemical migration testing is essential to assess their safety. FCMs play a vital role in the food supply chain by protecting food from contamination while preserving its freshness and nutritional value.
Researchers found that 40 chemicals detected in food packaging have been classified as hazardous and have potential carcinogenic properties and have been flagged by several regulatory agencies, but are still used in food packaging.

Why is this study relevant?

Researchers have expressed concern about removing these and other suspected carcinogens from the food chain.

Breast cancer: the first signs of the disease that should never be ignored

Early onset of cancer, especially breast cancer, is a major concern. Early breast cancer is defined as a diagnosis made before the age of 40. Genetic mutations such as BRCA1 and BRCA2, family history, environmental and lifestyle factors all increase the risk of developing the disease. Typical symptoms include lumps or changes in the shape and skin of the breast. Screening is important, as knowledge of family history can help with early diagnosis and improve treatment options.
