Justin Fields’ Steelers teammate appears to have been caught on camera yelling ‘QB1’

Justin Fields’ Steelers teammate appears to have been caught on camera yelling ‘QB1’

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ competition for the quarterback position is far from over this season, but after just three weeks of action, fans seem to agree that Justin Fields is the future. Fields led the Steelers to a 20-10 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, completing 24 of 32 passes for 245 yards and one touchdown against one interception with a passer rating of 96.0. Against a struggling Chargers offense, Fields looked electric, throwing downfield to his receivers and making critical plays with his legs. Before the start of the regular season, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin named Russell Wilson the team’s starting quarterback. However, Wilson has been dealing with a calf injury since training camp, which has kept him out of action to start the team. However, after guiding Pittsburgh to a 3-0 start, his teammates feel Fields will now be the starting quarterback.

But even after Fields’ 3-0 start to the season, Tomlin has not committed to naming Pittsburgh’s permanent starting quarterback. The plan is for Fields to start the Steelers’ next road game against the Indianapolis Colts. Tomlin met with the trainers and Wilson this week, and Wilson is not expected to fully participate in practice. Asked why he didn’t name Fields the starter, Tomlin said that would happen “when Russ is at an appropriate level of health.”

Fields has completed 73.3 percent of his passes in three starts and has turned the ball over once. His steady play has complemented a Steelers defense that has allowed just 26 points in three games. He has also helped Pittsburgh get to its first 3-0 start since 2020.

“I think it’s definitely a blessing to be here,” Fields said before Sunday’s win over the Chargers. “It was a little bittersweet when I got here, but I was happy to join an organization like this, and I couldn’t be happier now. So I’m just happy to have the opportunity to get out there on Sunday and hopefully come out with a few more wins.”

Despite not playing in a regular-season game, Wilson remained engaged by supporting Fields and his teammates on Sunday. However, on Sunday, the Steelers offense will face a Colts defense that has been one of the worst units in the NFL when it comes to stopping the run. The Colts defense has also struggled on third downs and in the red zone this season. This is another chance for Fields to flourish, and she will remain with her team until Tomlin says otherwise.
