Desmond Howard and Pete Thamel assess Clemson’s CFP chances after recent wins

Desmond Howard and Pete Thamel recently joined ESPN’s College Football Live to discuss the Clemson Tigers.

Members of the College Football Live Stream The panel was asked whether Clemson could make the 12-team College Football Playoff in 2024.

“I like the fact that they’re playing with a lot of confidence now. Cade Klubnik is playing well,” Howard said. “But they’re going to have to step up their game when they play a team like Louisville.”

At 3-0, Louisville currently leads the ACC. The Tigers will face the Cardinals in Week 10 in a game that could have playoff implications.

Ultimately, Howard isn’t ready to jump back on the Clemson bandwagon.

“Not so fast,” the analyst said.

However, Thamel disagreed with Howard’s opinion of Clemson.

“I’m going to be a little hesitant about Des,” Thamel said. “Look, we’re in a 12-team playoff era. Sure, the competition isn’t what it used to be, but I think Clemson has a clear path forward if they keep that momentum and that confidence.”

Thamel sees a path forward because of Clemson’s light schedule. The Cardinals are the only ranked team the Tigers have left on their regular-season schedule. With preseason favorite Florida State already at 3 losses, Louisville and No. 7 Miami (FL) appear to be the biggest challengers for the ACC title.

“Expect Clemson to be there on Selection Sunday,” Thamel said.

The Tigers’ next game will be against ACC newcomer Stanford in Week 5.
