Jenna Bush Hager’s daughter met bestselling author Judy Blume — and she had the sweetest reaction.

Speaking to PEOPLE at the Creator Book Club event with Jenna Bush Hager and Coco Mellors hosted by Threads at McNally Jackson Books Rockefeller Center in New York City on Wednesday, September 25, the mother of three, 42, recounted the time when her eldest daughter Mila, 11, was able to speak with Blume. At the event, Bush Hager spoke with Mellors about his new novel Blue Sisterswho is the Today with Hoda and Jenna the co-host’s September pick for her Read with Jenna book club.

“I was like, ‘Mila, this is Judy Blume.’ And she said to me, ‘You wrote the first chapter of a book I ever read,'” the proud mother recalls. “And I loved it because I was like, ‘Is this amazing?’ “

Bush Hager went on to say that her daughter became a voracious reader, scooping up titles throughout children’s and young adult literature.

“She fell in love with Jenny Han in its entirety, she devoured it all. She read The hunger gamesshe read everything Harry Potter. So I think it’s about helping her continue to discover what’s new,” Bush Hager continues. “And the school she goes to does a really good job of reading books from all over the world, which which I think is really cool.”

“Because literature is a way to travel to places we may not have the opportunity to go, and a way to create empathy and compassion through conversation, which I I think it’s really cool.”

In March, Bush Hager shared a cute photo on his Instagram Stories of his daughter Mila enjoying a good read while hanging out with a friend on beach chairs on the sand.

The two girls were reading Jenny Han’s book The summer I became prettywhich was adapted into an Amazon Prime series.

The mom of three shared what her two daughters had been reading recently in November 2023 while chatting with PEOPLE for a special event at Sal Abbracciamento School’s PS 108K in Brooklyn, to unveil her first Little Yellow Bookshelf.

“Mila reads a lot of chapters. She read a book called Save me a place by Sarah Weeks and she loved it. She really likes those books that somehow spark empathy. She likes to feel when she reads, which I also really like. So I’m just trying to help him find books that are like that,” she told PEOPLE at the time.

As for Poppy, “she just started reading chapter books and graphic novels on her own, so she reads the whole book.” Babysitters Club graphic novel series,” she explained.

“They’re so good because they take a series that we were obsessed with growing up and updated it a little bit and made it easier to read as an earlier reader.”

“He plays this really fun game, because he knows that I like books that talk about how much a mother loves her child, sweet books that are more for parents than children. So he always says : “Guess what we have. “Are you going to read tonight, Mom?” And then he’ll choose and it kind of depends on his mood, whether he wants to terrorize me or not,” she laughed.

“Sometimes he says, ‘We’re going to read The night you were born, Mom ! » and then sometimes he throws it over me and then says, “Not tonight, Mom!” which is hilarious and it works every time.”

Bush Hager’s new podcast, Open book with Jennawill launch on Thursday October 3.
