Kristen Bell told Instagram to ‘get rid of AI’ before becoming its official voice

Meta has struck deals with high-profile actors to lend their voices to its Meta AI chatbot, with Kristen Bell among the initial set of voices. Bell lending his voice is a bit of a surprise. Last June, she openly expressed her opposition to the use of her data by Meta’s AI.

She reposted a popular post on Instagram stating that she refused to consent to Meta using her content and image to train large language models and demanding that Instagram “get rid of the AI program.”

The prompt claims that by reposting, users are denying Meta permission to use their personal data for these purposes. Celebrities like Jessica Chastain, Sarah Paulson, and Ashley Tisdale have reposted a recent version of this prompt, although reposting it doesn’t exclude you.

The unease stems from a June update to Meta’s terms of service, which allows the company to use online posts, images and tracking data to train its Llama 3 AI model. You can unsubscribe through a series of settings, but not through an Instagram post.

The role of AI in the creative industries has sparked intense debate, with entertainment union SAG-AFTRA fighting to ensure its members are not replaced by AI without consent and working with the state of California to adopt AI bills that limit clones of AI actors. But artists and actors aren’t necessarily against the technology itself: they just want to be fairly compensated. In the case of Meta, The Wall Street Journal reports that the actors received millions for their contributions.

Meta and Bell representatives did not respond The edge» requests for comments.
