LaQuan Smith Created Chic Sleepwear Inspired by Samsung Galaxy Rings

Fashion designers are known for looking for inspiration anywhere and everywhere. For LaQuan Smith, a few pieces that appeared in his latest New York Fashion Week show had an unlikely muse: Samsung’s new Galaxy Ring. As part of its Spring/Summer 25 collection, the Lucid Dream by LaQuan Smith | The Samsung Galaxy limited edition luxury sleepwear range is now available for purchase and features four pieces comprising two looks, one for men and one for women.

“I wanted to partner with Samsung Galaxy because of the mission of the brand and its product,” says Smith. “As a designer, it’s hard to fall asleep, so when I was contacted about this potential partnership, I thought it made sense; especially before New York Fashion Week, where sleep becomes increasingly scarce as the show approaches.

The Lucid Dream pieces explore the concept of sleepwear as daywear, a nod to the 24/7 wearability of the Galaxy Ring. The capsule collection includes a bathrobe, women’s robe and men’s pants, all now available on laquansmith.com.

“The luxury of sleep, the fact that sleep is the ultimate rest, there’s something luxurious about that,” Smith says. “The fantasy of dreaming coupled with the concept of rest led me to the looks we created. Most people pare down their wardrobe before bed and I thought it would be luxurious to have a slightly maximalist look to take the wearer to REM.

Smith himself appreciates sleepwear as a daytime trend. “I like the idea of adapting the design language of a boudoir and integrating it into a daytime space,” he says. “Who doesn’t want to wear their look from dinner to bed!” »

The exuberant hue makes even more of a statement. “This color seemed very current and fresh to me,” says Smith. “Typically, we think of neutral and minimal color palettes when it comes to sleepwear. This chartreuse color looked like what LaQuan Smith’s client would want to wear to bed: bold, sexy, and adventurous.

The new Samsung Galaxy Ring is a health tracker that monitors your body’s activities, including sleep, exercise, energy, heart rate, water consumption and more, and provides information and data to help you adjust your lifestyle and routine to improve your health. The accompanying app makes the data easily accessible and digestible.

“The Galaxy Ring has been a game-changer in managing my well-being before Fashion Week,” says Smith. “With such a busy schedule, I relied on it to track my sleep, stress levels, and overall health. It’s easy to neglect self-care during intense times, but having this data at my fingertips has helped me stay balanced and focused. It was about maintaining this harmony between high performance and well-being.

Smith found the Galaxy Ring’s sleep tracking to be the most useful. “The sleep tracking feature has really been a plus for me,” he says. “In the days leading up to Fashion Week, sleep can be elusive, but knowing how much deep and REM sleep I was getting allowed me to adjust my routine and ensure I recharged effectively. Tracking stress was also crucial. This gave me real-time information, which helped me prioritize quiet moments in an otherwise chaotic schedule.

As a designer, the aesthetics of the Galaxy Ring are also important to him. “I love how minimalist and elegant the ring is,” says Smith. “For such a simple form, its function is far-reaching. It’s truly amazing how much analytics software is integrated into an otherwise minimal and elegant form. I love how it looks like a regular piece of jewelry, but inside the ring, the software hidden inside is extremely sophisticated.

In addition to the Galaxy Ring, Smith also used the Galaxy Z Fold 6, a new foldable phone, to help prepare for fashion week. “The Galaxy Z Fold 6 was essential to my workflow as a designer,” he says. “Its large foldable screen made it very easy to view sketches, mood boards and fabric samples in one place. It was like I had my entire creative process in my pocket. The multitasking functionality allowed me to communicate with my team while making adjustments to designs or reviewing production notes, all without having to switch devices. This really streamlined the process, especially when time is of the essence.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 naturally became an integral part of Smith’s design process. “I usually start by determining, for each season, through research, if it was a theme, a feeling or a detail that caught my attention,” says Smith. “I then take those inspirations and look for fabrics that align. Combining research with materials is what drives my process.

As for how Smith would style the Lucid Dream pieces in real life, it wouldn’t be all that different from how they were seen on the runway: “For women, the sheer dress under the dress, potentially with bases fun and sparkly, whatever. a bralette or a thong,” he says. “And for men, shirtless with silk pants and open dress. For me, the simplicity is what seemed most compelling about the sleepwear looks.

Nightwear, day or night, is what virtually every designer needs once the hectic period of New York Fashion Week is over. “After the parade, I felt an incredible sense of accomplishment,” Smith said. “It’s always very exciting to see months of hard work come to life on the track, but this season has been particularly rewarding with the new elements I have introduced. There’s nothing like the energy of New York Fashion Week: it pushes you, but it also inspires you. Seeing the audience’s reaction, feeling that connection with the fashion community and knowing that I was capable of moving the brand forward was everything.
