Postman attacked after using pepper spray on ‘aggressive’ dogs, police say

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – The Wichita Police Department is investigating an assault on a USPS mail carrier.

The incident happened around 2:50 p.m. on September 21 in the 800 block of S. Millwood Street.

Paul Shade, postal inspector and public information officer for the USPS, said his office received a report of a mail carrier being chased by two large dogs. The carrier used pepper spray to protect himself and then returned to his vehicle.

Shade said two men chased him several blocks and physically assaulted him, causing significant facial injuries. Postal carrier refused EMS.

“One of the primary missions of the Postal Inspection Service is the protection and safety of postal employees and we take these incidents in which our carriers are assaulted by members of the public very seriously,” Shade said in a statement. e-mail.

He said the actions of the two suspects are “unacceptable and will be followed up by local law enforcement and federal authorities.”

“The Postal Service would ask all customers to keep their dogs in confined spaces in order to protect our POSTAL employees,” Shade said.

He said mail was disrupted in the area due to the incident.
