Literary giant Jack London’s historic Northern California home is for sale for $4.95 million in Sonoma County wine country.

Located in Glen Ellen on three acres, the Wake Robin property is where London found inspiration and wrote his best-selling novels “The Sea Wolf” and “White Fang” in the early 20th century.

Located at the confluence of Sonoma and Graham creeks, Wake Robin was also once a Native American village and one of California’s first trout hatcheries, according to an account in “A History of Wake Robin Lodge.” The streams were harnessed to provide a water source for a growing community of Glen Ellen.

The 1823 journal of Father José Altimira, which records the Sonoma Mission expedition, provides what is believed to be the first mention of a person traveling on or near Wake Robin lands.

In the summer of 1902, London wasn’t the only famous person staying at Wake Robin. His wife, author Charmian Kittredge, and Kittredge’s aunt, famous writer Netta Eames, also lived there, according to the story.

Today surrounded by majestic oak trees, Wake Robin is a completely renovated residence. The modern home spans 4,311 square feet with three bedrooms and three bathrooms. The grounds are full of amenities, like a magnificent swimming pool and an octagonal-shaped lounge that was once the lobby of Wake Robin Lodge.

“The home is a classic Sonoma Valley Wine Country home that was updated in 2014 to a contemporary standard and with an appearance fit for today’s modern lifestyle,” said listing agent Matt Sevenau of Compass in a press release. “Some design inspiration plays on the lodge’s original octagonal lobby, which is now the living room with reclaimed beams and a floating staircase. These inspirations and architectural elements are then distributed throughout the house.

The current owners have invested about $300,000 in improvements, according to a Compass representative.

“While we love living in Glen Ellen, our work frequently takes us to Sonoma,” sellers Malcolm Walter and Elizabeth Fisher said in a statement. “We found a home in Sonoma with many of the same amenities, but not the rich history that 4100 Wake Robin offers. It’s a bittersweet decision.

The Wake Robin House is located near Jack London State Historic Park. London, a novelist and journalist, is perhaps best known for his short story “The Call of The Wild.”
