Discounted train tickets to reduce traffic jams

Two train companies operating services from Hull have announced they are reducing ticket prices in a bid to ease road congestion in the city.

Northern and TransPennine Express services from Hull to Scarborough and Selby will be suspended from Sunday for 12 weeks.

Hull City Council said it had worked with train companies on the initiative and “expects more people to consider using the train” as a result.

Return tickets and season tickets are 20% off, with some savings on single tickets as well.

Northern operates services between Hull and Selby and Hull and Scarborough, while TransPennine Express operates services between Hull and Selby.

Kerry Peters, Northern Regional Director, said: “Our trains have the capacity to carry many more people across the region than currently – and this temporary reduction in prices is important to see if we can convince people to abandon the road. to the rail.

Hull City Council is trying to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality in the city, with authorities holding regular meetings with train operators.

Councilor Mark Ieronimo, from the local authority, said: “By reducing the cost of train travel on these routes, we anticipate that more people will consider using the train, whether for their journeys daily or for their leisure. »
