MPs are offered 5 million shillings to impeach me

Vice President Rigathi Gachagua now claims MPs are being offered Sh5 million to support an impeachment motion against him.

Addressing a roadside rally in Mwea, Gachagua claimed Kirinyaga representative Njeri Maina and the area’s senator James Murango were offered money but refused.

“Njeri was told to take 5 million shillings, but she refused. Senator James Murango was also offered money, but he refused,” the PD claimed.

Gachagua further asked his critics to stop provoking impeachment.

“If he is tired of Mount Kenya votes, let him tell us. We took him as ours and voted for him sincerely. He should stop telling MPs to throw us out of power,” he said. -he added.

“I was elected by the people of Kenya, not the president. The president and I were elected on one list, and you chose Ruto because I was there.”

Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa announced his intention to present the motion and even claimed that the threshold of 116 signatures had already been reached.

The lawmaker expressed confidence that the motion he will table before Parliament is flawless and has already received overwhelming support from MPs across the political spectrum.

Barasa said he had already obtained 242 signatures of support, adding that this number could increase over the weekend.

A motion to impeach the vice president requires the signatures of at least 116 members of the National Assembly.

The motion must, however, garner the support of at least 233 deputies in the National Assembly to be adopted in the Senate.

A section of Kenya Kwanza lawmakers have accused the DP of taking advantage of recent Gen Z protests to unseat President William Ruto.

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, however, warned that “for every action, there will be a reaction”.
