A child shoots himself with a gun placed next to his father, who was busy playing on the phone. This is how it happened

A US resident of Pennsylvania was arrested after his infant son shot himself with a gun while he was busy playing a game on his phone. The incident occurred in May this year, leading to a police investigation. Father Luis Marin was arrested on felony charges of endangering the welfare of a child and recklessly endangering another person, according to a Sept. 26 news release from the County Prosecutor’s Office. The 34-year-old allegedly “played with his phone” while carelessly leaving a loaded gun on the bed, near other family members, Mirror US reported.

How did the incident happen?

The incident took place on the evening of May 15, 2024. Marin was “playing on the phone.” While he was completely focused on the phone, the two-year-old allegedly committed suicide with this weapon, according to Mirror US.

According to the press release, the boy was transferred to Lehigh Valley Hospital after the accident. The hospital authorities had informed the hospital about the incident. The young child was shot, causing broken ribs, a fractured shoulder blade and damage to his left lung. There was also a burn mark and dots on the boy’s skin, indicating that the gun was pressed against his skin or in very close contact when the gun was fired.

Father of toddler went into his bedroom before shooting

Just before the shooting, Luis Marin went to a bedroom on the second floor of the house to get a shoulder bag and lend it to his nephew. The bag was typically used by Marin to store his two handguns and his hearing protection. Marin had kept the gun out of his bag on his bed. He then gave the bag to his nephew, who left the house.

“This shooting is a frightening reminder to parents that children, even very young children, can and do find unsecured firearms in a home, and that they tend to play with them. Fortunately, this 2-year-old boy survived the shooting,” said District Attorney Kevin R Steele.
