Texas A&M and Texas meet for the first time in the regular season since 2011

Texas A&M and Texas renew the Aggies’ most played football rivalry when the teams face off Sunday in the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown. First kickoff at Mike A. Myer Stadium is 6:05 p.m.

This is the second consecutive top-15 opponent on A&M’s schedule. Including last Thursday’s game against Auburn, the Aggies face two teams with a combined record of 17-1-3 heading into action.

The Aggies have the best football program in the Lone Star State by every tangible measure. Texas A&M has 501 wins all-time, ahead of SMU (467) and North Texas (400), the only teams to reach the 400 mark. Texas A&M’s .731 winning percentage is joined only by North Texas ( 0.705) to exceed the 0.700 mark. The Aggies’ 28 NCAA Tournament appearances nearly match the combined total of the No. 2 and No. 3 teams on the Lone Star list with Texas (17) and SMU (14).

Texas A&M has a 21-6-2 lead in the all-time series against Texas since the program’s inception for the 1993 campaign. The series is tighter in Austin where the Aggies’ advantage is 6-4- 2. This is the first fight as SEC brothers. Since the Maroon & White joined the SEC for the 2012 campaign, the only two meetings have taken place in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The Aggies won 4-1 at home in 2019 and the Longhorns were 3-1 winners in 2022 in Austin.

Texas A&M posted six shutouts in 11 games, including clean sheets from three different goalies. In the SEC opener, Sydney Fuller recorded her third shutout of the season. She has a goals against average of 1.00 in her six starts. Grace McClellan posted two shutouts and Maysen Veronda recorded a 5-0 win over Lamar in the opener before a season-ending injury.

The Longhorns are 8-1-2 this season, including a 1-1-1 mark in league play. Texas is outscoring its opponents 25-7 this year and strong defense has held its opponents to 7.9 shots and 4.2 shots on goal per game. The Longhorns defeated Houston (1-0), CSU Bakersfield (4-0), SMU (6-3), Central Michigan (2-0), San Diego State (3-1), Long Beach State (3-0 ), Houston Christian (3-0) and Ole Miss (1-0). They have draws against Iowa (0-0) and Alabama (2-2) and a loss against Mississippi State (1-0).

Texas’ Lexi Missimo leads the team with 20 points on seven goals and six assists. All-American Trinity Byars is out of action with an injury. She had 13 points on five goals and three assists in the first five games of the season. Mia Justus started all 11 games in goal for the Longhorns, posting a 0.68 goals-against average and seven shutouts.

The game airs on SEC Network+ with Lincoln Rose (play-by-play) and Jessica Stamp (color) setting up the score. A radio call of the match is broadcast on Gospel 97.3 FM in the Brazos Valley with audio also available in the 12th Man Mobile app.
