Pittsburgh Steelers cut talented rookie WR for second straight week

INDIANAPOLIS– The Pittsburgh Steelers are cutting rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson for the second straight week, the team announced Sunday ahead of its game against the Indianapolis Colts. Wilson missed seven weeks and most of training camp with a high ankle sprain.

Speaking to Bob Labriola of Steelers.com before the game, head coach Mike Tomlin said Wilson has a long way to go to be fully ready to play a game.

“And specifically regarding Roman, he got injured on the sixth play of the first practice (with the pads) of training camp. And so there’s developmental things, there’s physical plays, conditioning and learning and things that come into play. His process doesn’t reflect the overall process. Roman doesn’t have a lot of helmet experience to fall back on. He’s healthy. “Still has a lot of work ahead of him to be ready to play,” said Tomlin. Tomlin told Wilson to keep his head down and keep working, and the snaps or opportunity to play would present themselves. The Steelers’ third-round pick out of Michigan, the team was among Wilson’s top prospects in training camp before he left his first padded practice due to injury.

Instead, the Steelers will play with just four wide receivers, and Cordarrelle Patterson, who can play both running back and wide receiver, seems likely to take that role.
