Plymouth Argyle 3-1 Luton Town: Ibrahim Cissoko’s double earns Plymouth victory

Luton came into the game on the back of back-to-back league wins for the first time since last December, when they beat Newcastle and Sheffield United in successive Premier League matches.

But it was Argyle who took the lead as Al Hajj’s wonderful and controlled strike gave the hosts an early lead after Ryan Hardie neatly palmed Michael Obafemi’s pass into the Swede’s path on the edge of the surface.

The hosts should have been further ahead just three minutes later when an unmarked Obafemi teed up Morgan Whittaker’s pullback 12 yards from the near post as the Pilgrims began to take control.

Rooney’s side almost got a second chance midway through the first half when Bali Mumba’s scuffed shot from a half-cleared corner fell kindly to Al Hajj’s feet, but Thomas Kaminski did well to get down and to push back his strike at ground level.

Luton began to assert themselves as the half wore on – Tahith Chong had a close-range strike from a difficult angle blocked while Adebayo headed a free-kick over the bar as the Hatters were taking some joy from the longer balls over the Plymouth defensive line.

An Argyle chance presented itself five minutes before the break, when an unmarked Joe Edwards shot straight at Kaminski after good work from Mumba while Luton could have been level but for an excellent block from Lewis Gibson after a slip from Kornel Szucs who let Adebayo in.

Adebayo missed another glorious chance early in the second half when he headed Reece Burke’s cross from six yards while Dan Grimshaw tipped a low effort close to the post soon after.

PLymouth thought they had sealed victory when Cissoko fired them over after some excellent work from Darko Gyabi, but just when the Argyle fans thought they could celebrate a two-goal advantage, Moses equalized seconds later.

The former Chelsea and Liverpool player controlled Alfie Doughty’s cross from the left and fired a low left-footed shot past Daniel Grimshaw for his first goal since joining as a free agent after leaving Spartak Moscow this summer.

Luton continued to put pressure on Argyle, but balls into the box remained disconnected and breaks were dealt with by the home defense.

Adam Randell fired a thunderous effort from outside the box onto the Luton bar in the 86th minute as Argyle tried to get a third, which they did in the third minute of added time as Dutch Under-21 winger Cissoko cutting in from the left, saw a blocked shot fall kindly onto his right foot and made no mistake to earn Argyle’s second league win of the season.
