Schools, establishments and businesses still impacted by Hélène

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – Lowcountry school districts are monitoring weather conditions from Helene and announcing changes to their schedules.

Allendale, Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, Georgetown, Hampton, Jasper, Orangeburg and Williamsburg counties are all under the Tropical Storm Warning. Tornado warnings have appeared sporadically as the storm moves through.

Here is an overview of the schedule changes announced by the districts:

Berkeley County School District

The Berkeley County School District is hosting an online learning day Friday. All after-school activities and after-school care programs will close at 6 p.m. Thursday. All schools and offices will be closed Friday and before and after school care programs will be canceled.

Charleston County School District

The Charleston County School District is hosting an online learning day Friday. School and departmental buildings will be closed.

Kaleidoscope and all other extracurricular activities and programs scheduled for tomorrow are canceled, however, high school athletic games will take place Friday evening.

Dorchester District 2

Dorchester District 2 will move to eLearning on Friday. Every Thursday, after-school programs and extracurricular activities are canceled.

Dorchester District 4

Dorchester District 4 canceled all extracurricular activities on Thursday and will move to an online learning day on Friday. District leaders say they made the decision based on forecasts for rain overnight, as well as sustained winds and potential gusts early in the morning.

Beaufort County School District

The Beaufort County School District will host an online learning day and a remote work day on Friday, September 27 and 30, assuming utility power and internet services are operating. Neighborhood buildings will be closed. All extracurricular activities are canceled on Thursday, Friday and Monday.

Colleton County School District

The Colleton County School District transitioned to eLearning on Friday September 27th and Monday September 30th.

Georgetown County

The Georgetown County School District will move to eLearning on Friday. Sports events have been canceled.

Orangeburg County School District

Orangeburg County Schools canceled all extracurricular activities Thursday and announced they will hold an online learning day Friday.

Williamsburg County School District

Williamsburg County Schools has canceled school for the day.

Other schools

The following individual schools have also announced schedule changes:

  • Clemson University: Clemson University canceled classes on Monday, September 30. All in-person and online classes and lab classes are canceled for Clemson, Greenville, Charleston and Greenwood locations.
  • Dorchester County Career and Technology Center: The Dorchester County Career and Technology Center will move to eLearning Friday.
  • First Baptist School of Charleston: First Baptist School in Charleston has canceled school for Friday.
  • Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College: Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College has canceled classes beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday. The college will be closed on Friday.
  • Palmetto Christian Academy: Palmetto Christian Academy will host an at-home learning day on Friday.
  • South Carolina State University: South Carolina State University canceled classes Thursday after 5 p.m. The university will operate with a three-hour delay on Friday. Classes will begin and offices will open Friday at 11:30 a.m. Essential employees should report on a normal schedule.
  • Southern Charleston University: CSU moved to eLearning on Friday, campus offices will remain closed until 10 a.m.
  • Trident Technical College: All operations, including classes and campus office operations, will be virtual on Friday.

Other organizations

  • City of Charleston: The City of Charleston has delayed the opening of all city facilities and offices and will not open them until 10 a.m. Friday.
  • Charleston County Government: All county offices and facilities will open at noon.
  • Berkeley County Government: County offices and facilities will have a delayed opening of 10 a.m.
  • Boone Hall Plantation: The Boone Hall Pumpkin Patch and Boone Hall Fright Nights will be closed Friday. Boone Hall plans to be open Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and all other days as scheduled. Those who purchased tickets for Friday can use those tickets on any other day the event is open this season.
  • Charleston City Market: The kickoff of the Charleston City Market Night Market recognizing more than 30 businesses with “Handmade in Charleston” recognition, originally scheduled for Thursday, has been postponed until October 24.
  • Charleston County Public Library: The Folly Beach, McClellanville and St. Paul’s Hollywood libraries will be closed all day Friday. All other branches will reopen at noon on Friday.
  • Charleston County Public Library Board of Trustees: The Charleston County Public Library Board of Trustees meeting, previously scheduled for Thursday, will now be held October 3 at 5:30 p.m. at the Mt. Pleasant Library.
  • Ferry service between Daufuskie Island and Lowcountry: Lowcountry Ferry will close early Thursday and Friday. The ferry service closed at 1 p.m. on Thursday. The reopening is scheduled for Friday at 1 p.m.
  • James Island: The city is assessing storm damage and plans to open facilities at noon.
  • Unveiling of the Place Marion fountain sculpture: The Rotary Club of Charleston’s unveiling of bronze artist Scott Penegar’s latest Marion Square Fountain sculpture, originally scheduled for Thursday, has been rescheduled for Oct. 3 at 4 p.m.
  • Moncks’ corner: Town of Moncks Corner offices will open at 10 a.m.
  • North Charleston Police Department: The “Save-a-Life Day” free Narcan distribution event at Seacoast Church in West Ashley, scheduled for Thursday, has been canceled. The event will be rescheduled for the future.
  • South Carolina Highway Patrol: The South Carolina Highway Patrol Training Class 126 graduation ceremony, scheduled for Friday, has been canceled.
  • South Carolina Aquarium: The aquarium will not open until noon.
