The 11 best moments from Twenty One Pilots’ show at Little Caesars Arena – The Oakland Press

It’s hard to imagine that Twenty One Pilots left ideas on the drawing board for their Clancy World Tour, which visited the metro area on Sunday, September 29, at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.

The Columbus, Ohio duo’s two-hour, 15-minute performance was a theatrical extravaganza that left no time for a beer or a bathroom break, lest you miss out on something cool and inventive. Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun offered a stunt-to-song ratio comparable to that of Madonna, Coldplay, U2 or Kiss, all to reinforce the strong musical quality of the 31 songs they performed. It was both a celebration of the duo’s ambitious new album, ‘Clancy’ – the latest part of a conceptual cycle that began with 2018’s ‘Trench’ – and also of Twenty One Pilot’s 15-year recording career, with pieces that went back to his time. Self-titled debut in 2009, when the group was a quartet and spanning styles from rap and punk to pop and reggae.

It’s the kind of spectacle that Twenty One Pilots fans, whose cultish enthusiasm Sunday included dressing up in many of the costumes and images that Joseph and Dun have sported over the years (including the dark neck and paint at the hand of the first), have come to expect, but even more than ever. With all its spooky whirlwind – pyrotechnics, fire, lasers, video screens, multiple stages, outfit changes, magic tricks, recorded music tracks to reinforce the sound and, of course, a shower of confetti during the encore – its purpose was entirely about the two musicians and their relationship with a crowd that filled Little Caesars. From the general admission floor to the upper level, fans were captivated and moaned throughout the night, allowing Joseph and Dun to weave a dizzying phantasmagoria that moved from one climax to another at dizzying speed.
