Police name eight-year-old boy shot dead on farm

Police have named an eight-year-old boy shot dead on a farm.

Jay Cartmell suffered head and facial injuries on land near the A66, north of Warcop, Cumbria.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Saturday around 2:50 p.m.

A firearm was recovered at the scene by police and the youngster, from Frizington, Cumbria, was taken by air ambulance to hospital where he died overnight.

A man in his sixties was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault.

He was taken into custody and later remanded in custody on suspicion of manslaughter through gross negligence.

The man was later released on bail while police continued their investigation.

Cumbria Police have urged any witnesses to come forward.
