MARION – Western Dubuque’s Brock Wilson turned his potential into tangible results.

The idea of becoming a contender for top conference honors early in the season came to fruition for the Bobcats senior.

Wilson shot a 2-under 71 for medalist honors in the Mississippi Valley Conference’s Mississippi Division Monday afternoon at Hunters Ridge Golf Course. His performance elevated him to MVC Mississippi Player of the Year. Linn-Mar won the division final and captured the division team championship.

Wilson added to his two previous all-conference awards with his best finish.

“I felt like I could win,” Wilson said. “I just didn’t know.

“I improved during the season. I had a pretty solid summer. I broke my finger, but I played good golf afterward.

Wilson powered through play on the front nine, shooting 2 under with birdies on holes No. 2 and sixth. Both were par 5s. He added a birdie on the par-4 11th for a back-to-back 37.

“I felt good playing,” Wilson said. “I just wanted to play good golf and not worry about anything around me. As we reached the end, I knew it was close. I just focused on one shot and played good golf.

Interestingly, one of Wilson’s worst rounds took place at Hunters Ridge. He shot a 92 earlier, but had a 3-under nine-hole round at Hunters last year.

“I knew I had the ability to bounce back,” Wilson said. “As long as I could get off the tee, I’d be fine.” It was everything I was looking for.

With the playoffs just a week away, Wilson is focused on getting the team back to state. He remembers what it was like as a sophomore and wants to recapture that excitement.

“I want to make sure I leave the district,” Wilson said. “We really want to go there as a team and get a state banner. This is what we focus on.

Linn-Mar was the favorite in the team race from the start, which included scores from the season-opening MVC Super Meet and the previous division meet. The Lions posted a rating of 313, compared to 320 for Cedar Rapids Xavier. The Saints also finished second overall.

“It’s a total season-long accomplishment,” James said of a team full of juniors and seniors. “I think the experience paid off a little bit for us too.”

Linn-Mar got off to an inauspicious start. The first shot James saw ended up in a bunker with a clogged lie and resulted in a bogey. Another Lion opened with a triple bogey. Others opened with back-to-back bogeys. They battled throughout a round marked by firm, rain-free greens. Low scores were rare.

“I’m most proud of the day and how our guys handled it,” James said. “We didn’t start strong. … You come out of the gates of your home course and slowly come back out and it’s like it’s gone. They showed us more today than I’ve seen all season in terms of keeping their innings together.

Christian Cloyd shot 75. Max Faulkner had 77 and Ben Steenrod added 80. Dylan Heater and Trevor Denny had 81 to round out the Lions’ scoring. Cloyd finished second in the round and finished one shot behind Wilson for player of the year.

“I know he would have loved to win Player of the Year,” James said. “He missed it by one point. He accomplished a lot this year. I know he’s going to use this as fuel to his fire.

“I’m happy with the way he kept his cool.”

JACK ROGERS MVC VALLEY POY OF IOWA CITY HIGH

Iowa City High’s Jack Rogers earned MVC Valley Player of the Year honors. Rogers shot 71 Monday at Irv Warren Golf Course in Waterloo. Rogers added a 68 from the Super Meet and a 74 from the premier division for a total of 213, two strokes ahead of Drew Larimer of Cedar Falls.

Dubuque’s Henry Their Wahlert shot 66 for Monday’s divisional medalist honors. The Golden Eagles also won the division team title. Wahlert shot 286 to beat Cedar Falls by nine on Monday. The Golden Eagles recorded a three-round total of 882, winning the conference team crown by 10 over the Tigers.
