Kia Pegg has addressed a “bittersweet” win at the Inside Soap Awards for Chopped Soap Doctors.

The star plays receptionist Scarlett Kiernan in the series. Despite only joining the series in 2022, Kia has become a much-loved member of the Doctors cast.

It was announced in October last year that the series had been axed by BBC One, a decision which was criticized by almost everyone given the series’ popularity with audiences.

The long-running soap opera, a staple of British afternoon television for almost two and a half decades, finished production in March with the final episode set to air in December.

Commenting on the sad decision to end the programme, a BBC spokesperson said at the time: “We have taken the very difficult decision to end daytime drama Doctors after 23 years.

“With the high inflation of drama production, the cost of the program has increased significantly, and additional investment is also now required to renovate the site where the show is filmed, or to move it to another home.

“With a flat fee, the BBC’s funding challenges force us to make difficult choices in order to deliver greater value to audiences. We remain fully committed to the West Midlands and all funding for doctors will be reinvested in new programs in the region.

“We would like to thank all the cast and crew of Doctors who have been involved with the series since 2000.”

Last night a number of people from Soapland went to the annual Inside Soap Awards.

This was good news for the cast and crew of Doctors, who managed to take back the gong for outstanding achievement.

Although it was time to celebrate, there was certainly sadness in the air amid the victory, as star Kia Pegg explained in a recent article on X.

“A bittersweet victory for sure,” she wrote.

“One of the only positives to come from the cancellation of our wonderful show has been the outpouring of love, not only from our audience but from our colleagues in the industry, especially those of the soap world.”

Following the announcement of Doctors’ cancellation, a number of actors have paid tribute to the series, including Ian Midlane who plays Al Haskey.

“(I am) so ridiculously, and embarrassingly, proud to have played the role of Al for over eleven years in the most charming and life-changing work of my life,” he wrote on X, with a photo of Al’s iconic glasses.

“My heart is full of love for the people on this show and for the joyful, creative environment in which we forged and worked our butts off…….”

“It will never be the same again. But we move forward with hope in our hearts and a smile on our cheeks. The proudest thing on television today is………I worked on Doctors. @BBCDoctors.’
