Myrtle Beach area teen hit in face with razor blade by another student, lawsuit says

A Conway parent is suing Horry County Schools after her middle school student was hit in the face with a razor blade by another student, according to the lawsuit.

Jamie Holmes filed the suit on behalf of the student, who was 13 at the time and attended Whittemore Park Middle School, located at 500 El Bethel Road in Conway. The incident occurred on January 2, 2023.

Horry County Schools “does not comment on matters related to pending litigation,” according to an email from spokeswoman Lisa Bourcier.

The suit, filed Sept. 27, 2024, said the student, identified as LM, was in the care and custody of school employees when she was assaulted by another student in the lunchroom. LM suffered a cut to his face from the razor blade, according to the suit.

Employees of the Horry County Schools district owed a duty to LM “to ensure that she was kept safe at all times and to prevent weapons from entering the school,” the suit states.

The complaint states that “no explanation was given” as to how the other student was able to bring a razor blade into the school or “what precautions were taken to prevent weapons from entering the school.” school “.

The school failed to provide security and implement safety measures, including having an appropriate number of teacher aides in the lunchroom where LM was injured, according to the complaint.

LM required medical treatment for the laceration on his face and will continue to need it, the suit states.

The suit seeks a jury trial for costs and damages.
