State seeks death penalty for Lawrence County murder suspect

LAWRENCE CO., Ala. (WAFF) – Prosecutors said they plan to seek the death penalty for a man accused of kidnapping a wife and murdering her husband during a Lawrence County home invasion.

In November 2023, authorities said Jordan Hernandez, along with Auburn Moore and Asia Hubbard, broke into a home and shot Dustin Grimes dead.

In a court filing from Sept. 23, Lawrence County District Attorney Errek Jett said he would be seeking the death penalty against Hernandez.

Grimes’ wife Karen Grimes told investigators she had been sleeping in bed with her husband when she heard someone enter her room. Then she heard a loud bang and saw her husband was dead.

She said the suspects forced her to help them steal guns from her home and then kidnapped her. Grimes was able to escape after the suspects brought her to an ATM to withdraw cash.

The two alleged accomplishments of Hernandez, Moore and Hubbard, are also awaiting trial. They are both charged with murder, kidnapping and robbery.

At a preliminary hearing last year for Moore, investigators said Moore was in an open relationship with both victims.
