Oh dear! Deer trapped in Muskegon pool, rescued by fire department

MUSKEGON, Mich. – In Muskegon, near the intersection of Blodgett and Glen, there was a doe on Tuesday that ended up where he didn’t belong.

The deer took a dip in a backyard pool. Neighbor Joe Stapel has never seen anything like it in the 41 years he has called the area home. But he has seen many more deer.

“They are now coming into our neighborhood more and more often,” says resident Joe Stapel.

Joe says that’s because of the wooded area nearby.

The Muskegon Fire Department received the call.

“…from a concerned citizen, about a deer stuck in a pool,” said Lt. Dan Oleniczak of the Muskegon Fire Department (MFD).

This is not an everyday occurrence, Lt. Oleniczak explained.

“Definitely not a routine conversation that we have all the time,” Oleniczak said.

After trying a number of different methods, firefighters were able to get the deer out of the water.

“You could definitely tell the animal was getting stressed,” Oleniczak said.

Maybe it was stressed, but apparently it was fine.

“So the deer ran away and we then found it resting in some bushes. It looked like it was OK,” Oleniczak said.

Neighbor Joe Stapel tells FOX 17 that he saw the deer again on Wednesday morning, near the house where they fell into the pool. Let’s hope they’ve learned their lesson.
