How to Join or View a Zoom Meeting on Your Smart TV

How to Join or View a Zoom Meeting on Your Smart TV

Zoom is a name the world came to know in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. It has become an essential tool for many businesses as they have learned to operate remotely, allowing professionals to participate in meetings from the comfort of their homes, and students of all ages have become familiar with Zoom after schools had to use distance learning. Nowadays, it is a commonly used program among remote and hybrid employees around the world.

Most use video conferencing software on their computer or mobile device, but every once in a while someone wants to be more comfortable and join a meeting from their couch with a big screen. Or maybe you have a large conference room equipped with a TV and want to use it for Zoom meetings to connect with your remote employees. Users with Sky Glass, Sony and Apple TV can use them as Zoom for Home devices.

Don’t feel left out if you don’t own one of these TVs: there are other methods that make the video conferencing app accessible to other brands. Some methods are wireless and also require certain capabilities of your mobile device, while others only require an HDMI cable.

You can download the Zoom app

Using Zoom for Home TV on your Sky Glass TV, Sony Smart TV or Apple TV is quite simple, just download the Zoom app. However, there are specific TVs on which it is available. In case you’re not sure, Zoom has a long list of Sony Bravia TVs on its website that the Zoom for Home TV app is compatible with. The app is also available for all second-generation or later Sky Glass and Apple TV 4K TVs. There are also a few other prerequisites for these three brands.

Zooming usually requires the use of a camera if you intend to show your face to your colleagues. Apple TV 4K users can use an iPhone or iPad as long as it supports Continuity Camera. Those with a Sky Glass TV will need to use a Sky Live camera and Sony users will need the Bravia CMU-BC1 camera.

Of course, not all TVs are built the same and you have to use a different storefront to find the app for each.

  1. Use the Sky App Store if you are using a Sky Glass TV to download Zoom.
  2. Use the Google Play Store if you are using a Sony TV.
  3. Use the Apple Store if you have an Apple TV.

You can mirror Zoom to a TV with Apple AirPlay

AirPlay is a convenient and easy-to-use feature for those who own Apple devices. As long as you have an Apple TV or AirPlay-enabled smart TV, you can mirror the screen of your iPhone, iPad, MacBook, or Apple desktop computer.

If you are using an iOS device, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to Zoom on your iOS device.
  2. Make sure the TV and iOS device are on the same Wi-Fi network.
  3. Go to “Room Management” and tap “Zoom to Rooms”.
  4. Click on the “Meeting” tab.
  5. There will be a toggle/slider button next to the “Apple Screen Mirroring” options. Click on it to activate it.
  6. A verification box may appear. If so, choose “Enable”.
  7. To save this setting, click the box next to “Start Apple Screen Mirroring.”

Now anything that appears on your iPhone or iPad, including Zoom, will appear on Apple TV. Apple has a long list of AirPlay compatible devices if you’re unsure about your TV.

If you want to use your Apple computer, follow these steps:

  1. The computer and TV must be on the same network.
  2. Look for the AirPlay icon in the computer’s top menu bar (it’s a rectangle with a triangle).
  3. Click the icon and a drop-down menu will appear, listing all AirPlay compatible devices.
  4. Click on the device you want to AirPlay to.

Now just open Zoom on your computer and it will appear on your TV.

You can also use a Chromecast to mirror Zoom

If you don’t have an Apple device and can’t use AirPlay, you’re out of luck. While Chromecast is a nifty gadget for streaming videos from apps on your phone like Netflix and Disney+, it also opens up the ability to screen mirror from an Android phone, the Chrome web browser, or ‘a Chromebook.

With a Chromecast plugged into your TV, you can cast your phone’s screen to it by following these steps:

  2. Open the Google Home app on your phone.
  3. Tap the Chromecast in the “Devices” tab.
  4. Look for the “Cast my screen” button at the bottom. Tap it.
  5. Another window will appear, explaining what you are about to do. Just tap “Cast Screen”.
  6. Your phone screen will now be displayed on the TV with the Chromecast connected.
  7. Open Zoom and it will be on your TV.

You can do the same thing with your laptop or desktop computer.

  1. Open Zoom on your computer.
  2. Open the Chrome browser.
  3. Tap the three-dot menu button at the top right.
  4. Click “Save and Share,” then “Cast.”
  5. Tap “Sources” for a drop-down menu.
  6. Unless you’re using Zoom in Chrome, select “Cast screen.”

Your other option is “Cast Tab”, but this will only cast a single browser tab to your TV. You must share the entire computer screen when using the Zoom application.

Use Zoom with a Roku

Roku users are not left out. Just like AirPlay and Chromecast, Roku users can stream Zoom to their TV from a computer or phone.

Computer users, whether on Windows 11, follow these steps:

  1. With Windows 11, you need to go to “Settings” and open the “Bluetooth and devices” menu.
  2. Click “Add Device”.

Windows 10 users:

  3. Click “Add Bluetooth or other device”.

Windows 11 and Windows 10 users must then:

  1. Choose “Display or wireless dock”.
  2. Your Roku should appear in a list of devices. Select it.
  3. Click “Change projection mode”, then “Duplicate”. This will mirror your computer screen to the TV your Roku device is connected to.

Don’t worry, Android users, you haven’t been forgotten. Just make sure you already have the Roku app downloaded on your phone. Then make sure the Roku and phone are on the same Wi-Fi network.

  1. Drag the status bar down and select “Smart View”.
  2. Tap your Roku in the device list.
  3. You will be asked if you would like to start casting. Tap “Start now”.
  4. Depending on your TV, you may need to click “Allow” on the TV.
  5. Turn your phone to landscape view and use Zoom as the active app to stream Zoom to the TV.

Zoom also works on some Amazon Fire devices

Who wouldn’t want to voice activate the apps they use on their TV? Fire TV Cube (2nd Gen) and Omni Fire TV owners can now use Zoom for Home, and those users can interact with Alexa to operate Zoom.

  1. The Alexa app must be downloaded to a mobile device.
  2. Link your calendar to the Alexa app so your Zoom meetings appear there.
  3. When you first set up your Fire TV, set it up with your Alexa account.
  4. Go to the Fire TV app store.
  5. Find the Zoom app and click the install button.

Once the Zoom for Home app is installed and everything is set up, you can simply say “Alexa, open the Zoom app” and it will open it on your Fire TV. It’s not too different from the app on your phone or desktop, as you can join meetings, start instant meetings, and even share content from your desktop client. If your calendar is linked to the Alexa app, you can see all scheduled meetings when you open the Zoom for Home app on your Fire TV and join a Zoom meeting by clicking on one of them. You can also use a meeting ID to access a meeting.

Connect your device to your TV with an HDMI or DisplayPort cable

Every TV these days has an HDMI port that most owners use for their gaming console or 4K Blu-Ray player, but you can also use it to connect your smart TV to an additional monitor for your computer . If you’re lucky, some TVs even have a DisplayPort connection, giving you an arguably better looking picture. There are some advantages to taking the hard line route. First, you don’t need to rely on a wireless signal between devices. Second, by using the TV as a second monitor, you can have Zoom on the TV while your browser and other apps are open on another screen.

Unfortunately, this also means you don’t have the freedom to wander around your living room with your laptop like you could if you were using AirPlay. You also can’t use this method with your phone unless you have a special HDMI adapter.

Ultimately, there’s no shortage of methods available to you if you want to use your TV for a Zoom meeting. You are not limited to your computer or phone.
