Vidor ISD says there is no evidence of gas leak in middle school building

The Vidor School District believes the gas smell that prompted an evacuation and possible cancellation of classes at the middle school came from something outside the building. Classes are expected to resume on Wednesday.

The district evacuated Vidor Middle School around 9 a.m. Tuesday after staff and students noticed the smell of gas.

As a precaution, administrators contacted Orange County Emergency Services and a meter reading determined a gas level in the building.

With an abundance of caution, the district evacuated students to the Vidor High School gymnasium and gave parents the opportunity to choose their students.

The odor was gone by approximately 12:30 p.m. and all gas valves were assessed and determined to be closed. All readings were normal.

“At this point, it is believed that the odor was in the exterior environment and reaching the interior of the building,” says VISD Superintendent Jay Killgo. “We appreciate the efforts of the entire Vidor Middle School staff and others throughout the district who have helped. Vidor ISD would also like to commend the staff and students for their understanding and cooperation. As always, we will continue to evaluate our processes and work to learn from this event and ensure the greatest safety for our students.
