Cleveland Browns rookie Mike Hall Jr. suspended 5 games after August arrest

The NFL announced Tuesday afternoon that it has suspended Browns rookie defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr. for five games in connection with his August arrest on a domestic violence charge in Avon.

Hall has been on the commissioner’s exempt list since Aug. 27, meaning he has already missed the first four games. For this reason, he will be able to return from suspension next Monday, the day after the Browns’ game against the Washington Commanders.

Hall was allowed into the facility while on the roster, but he was not allowed to participate in practices or games.

Hall, 21, a product of Streetsboro High School and Ohio State, pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct, a fourth-degree misdemeanor, Sept. 19 in Avon Lake Municipal Court. After pleading to the lesser charge, he was fined $250, given a 30-day suspended jail sentence and placed on two years’ supervision.

Hall was initially charged with domestic violence, knowingly causing or attempting to cause physical harm, a first-degree misdemeanor, after being arrested and arraigned on August 13. The arrest came a day after an incident involving his fiancée, with whom he had a son, at their home in Avon.

The initial incident occurred on August 12 at the Avon home owned by Hall and his fiancée. After leaving the scene before police arrived, he was arrested the next day and charged with domestic violence.

The official statement in the police report says Hall was verbally abusive at times during the incident, dragging her by her feet out of the house and into the driveway at one point. He later also punched a hole in a bedroom door and held a gun to her head while saying, according to the report, “I’m going to (expletive) end this. I don’t care .”

However, according to multiple reports, the alleged victim returned to Avon police four days later and gave another statement. WKYC-TV reported that she recanted her previous statement in that meeting with police.

The Browns’ April second-round pick was back in the building the day after his arrest and practiced that afternoon in the first of two joint workouts with the Minnesota Vikings. He left practice with what’s called a “stinger” but played in the preseason game on August 17.

Hall played a combined 84 defensive snaps in the three preseason games, along with nine more special teams snaps. He finished with two assisted tackles and two quarterback hits.
