Message from Heated Mets’ Jesse Winker to his ex-teammate: You must be wrong

MILWAUKEE – It seems like every stadium outside of Citi Field Mets designated hitter Jesse Winker walks in, he is greeted with the loudest jeers. That makes sense. When he’s on the other side, his bluster can be misguided, rubbing you the wrong way.

But when Winker received the loudest boos when the Brewers’ PA announcer called out his name before Game 1 of the Wild Card Series at American Family Field, it came as a surprise. It was his old team and the reception was rather cold.

It was even more surprising when his former teammate Willy Adames started chirping at Winker after hitting a game-tying two-run triple in the second inning.

As soon as this happened, social media was abuzz. Videos began circulating with Winker turning his head, appearing to say something to Adames as he ran toward second base. However, Winker’s mask blocked any view of his mouth, so there is no definitive proof that this is actually the case.

After the Mets’ 8-4 win over the Brewers, Winker was the first to speak to reporters.

“At first, I was watching Pete (Alonso) and (Mets third base coach Mike Sarbaugh) all the time,” a visibly angry Winker said. “As soon as I saw the Sarby Windmill, I focused my attention on second place and said to myself: ‘I’m going to move to third.’ That’s all that happened.

“If you think I can run and talk, you don’t know my athletic abilities. I can’t do this.

Adames doesn’t believe it, however. He insists Winker initiated a verbal argument.

“I don’t know what was going through his mind, but he just started saying stuff,” Adames said via Bally Sports Wisconsin. “And I just say something, you know, I don’t know. I think that’s, you know, the type of player he is. That’s how it is.”

When asked if he was disappointed by the trade, Adames called the incident with his former Brewers teammate “surprising.”

Perhaps Adames heard Winker, who was yelling toward the Mets dugout, hoping to energize his team.

“Let’s go!” ESPN cameras captured Winker saying.

In the end, Winker and the Mets had the last laugh, stealing the first game of the best-of-three series after trailing 2-0 after one, then 4-3 after four. All New York needs is to win one of the next two scheduled games to advance to the NLDS.
