Riverview Jr. High continues to rock throughout the decades

MURRAY, Utah — Our Cool School of the Week, Riverview Junior High, is the first junior high we have visited this school year. Although the school was built in 1961 and may look “old,” students say it’s part of the vintage charm.

“I think it’s pretty cool because it’s so old and still standing and all the staff and faculty are just really great,” said one SBO member.

In the building, students have the opportunity for hands-on learning in classes such as ceramics, where the imagination comes to life. One student made a monster, another a uni-kitty and much more.

“I think what makes Riverview such a cool school is that we give our kids the opportunity to do practical electives,” says ceramics teacher Miss Brown.

Just a hallway away is the choir room, where students perform some of the most creative choir warm-ups you’ve ever seen, including gently slapping each other’s backs like massages.

“The purpose of that warm-up is to relieve some of the tension so that we can sing much more easily and hit the higher and lower notes,” one choir student explained.

The warm-up worked because the students hit different notes during their performance.

In addition to the choir, the school also offers other arts programs such as theater and orchestra. The theater class is preparing for their version of Hamlet next week while the orchestra is already in the Christmas spirit.

“I think it’s the students who make Riverview a cool school,” said theater teacher Ms. Moss. “They always show up and work hard.”

One of the coolest things about Riverview is that 13 of their employees are Riverview alumni!

“I feel like we’re all one big family,” said one teacher. “We are so involved with our students because we went to school with their parents or grandparents, and parents helped raise us in our community.”
