Jack Antonoff to open free public recording studios

Jack Antonoff announced plans to open free, public recording studios in LGBTQ+ youth shelters, with the goal of eventually bringing public studios to cities across the country.

According to a statement posted on social media, Antonoff plans to “spend much of the next chapter of my life bringing these spaces to people who otherwise wouldn’t have access to them,” starting with “working with the Ally Coalition to build studios.” in shelters for LGBTQ+ youth.

The details of that plan aren’t quite worked out yet, but Antonoff said it would involve having “a network of engineers that we’ll fund that will train people at these sites.” From there, the hope is to “build these spaces, pay for maintenance and engineering, and let the centers assign time slots for people to use them.” After that, “we can start expanding into cities once that’s done.”

Elsewhere in his statement, Antonoff reflects on how “wonderful” advances in home recording technologies have become, but says “the studio is different.”

“Working with analog gear and creating sounds that are impossible to recreate is powerful,” he wrote. “It’s vital to know you’re in a space for a limited time and to push yourself to the end. A studio is a rare space and how you operate is different because of it… I loved recording at home but my life changed in a recording studio. There is magic there.

To that end, the Bleachers frontman compared music recording to other popular activities and questioned why there was such a gap when it came to access to facilities. “I get on planes, I look down and I see baseball fields everywhere, basketball courts all over my neighborhood, trails, public parks and gyms, etc. “, he wrote. “There are many facilities available for what we enjoy.”

Continuing, Antonoff gets to the heart of the matter: “I dream of the studio being a place that everyone can access, not just those who have the money to do so. It should be a place where everyone can experience and find out if they’re meant to be there.

Antonoff’s statement also included a call to action, asking anyone interested in contributing to the project to contact us via email. “The reason I’m getting the word out so early is because anyone who believes in this and has resources that can help should contact us as we get this project going,” he wrote.

In conclusion, he addressed the major recording studios he frequents, writing: “Finally, for all the commercial studios I love, this concept is strictly for those who can’t afford to upgrade from studio time in those spaces, so I think that’s helpful to our spaces. Also.”
