SACS takes stock of bus driver shortage and announces new hires

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA) – Southwest Allen County Schools (SACS) leaders say they have made progress in resolving bus route issues following route cancellations early in the school year.

The district canceled several bus routes during the first month of the school year, highlighting a shortage of drivers.

In a September interview, SACS Transportation Director Mike Martin said the district was doing everything possible to hire and train new drivers, with a goal of hiring at least eight to address the shortage .

SACS Superintendent Kent A. DeKoninck sent a letter to families this week, stating that five new drivers are expected to begin their routes by Friday, November 1.

They say four full-time drivers began training last week to be fully certified after the Thanksgiving holiday, noting that at least 12 other drivers have started the application process.

DeKoninck says to improve route efficiency, the Department of Transportation will consolidate bus stop locations. He says affected riders will be contacted by the district.
