Madres ready to cheer on the Padres

Before a big Padres game, members of the Madres often get together, their way of preparing to cheer on the Friars.

And Wednesday morning was no different, there was no shortage of browns and yellows at the breakfast table at Denny’s in El Cajon.

As members of the San Diego Madres shared memories from years past, while talking about their hopes for this year’s Padres playoff run.

Judge McGuire has been a member of the nonprofit organization since 1983.

The same year, she became a subscriber.

And while she’s seen a lot of Friar Baseball, she says this year feels different and she’s ready for it.

She says: “This year there is something exciting. Who knows how many more games I’ll be able to attend. I’m getting older so this might be in the new years. I might not be able to go or walk as well. That’s it. It’s this year.

The Madres have been in existence since 1972. They strive to provide baseball and softball opportunities to the children of San Diego County.

And of course, they’re also big Friar fans.

ABC10NEWS reached out to the Madres ahead of the big games. This was our last visit two years ago, just before the Padres beat the Dodgers in the National League Division Series.

Mom Monique Coleman says being a Padres fan is in her blood.

Coleman adds: “I’ve been a Padres fan for as long as I can remember. My father had his portable radio to listen to the game. My mother had subscriptions, we grew up going 2 to 3 times a week. This is the best childhood ever.

And it’s a love that she passed on to her four children.

Coleman says, “Our entire living room turns into a veritable Padres Cave. We have the Joe Mugrove bobbleheads, covers, pins, posters and height charts, everything we get from a Padres game is posted on the wall.
