Season 2's mysterious Easter egg puts the Grim Reaper on Caitlyn's face, and I'm sure that can only be good news

A blink-and-you’ll-miss-it reference in Arcane season 2 seems like a brutal bit of foreshadowing, and it makes me terrified for the fate of the main characters.

After the death of her mother in the first episode of Arcane In season 2, Caitlyn is given a key by her father, which she uses to access a database of information set up by her mother. That database informs her of a series of ventilation ducts built throughout the Undercity that Caitlyn decides to weaponize in her pursuit of Jinx. Much of that information is accompanied by hand-drawn renderings of the effects of pollution within Zaun, and the mythology that has been built around it.

Much of that mythology is based on Janna, the wind goddess Jinx references at the climax of episode three, but a black-and-white figure with glowing eyes is also featured. Eagle-eyed fans of the show noticed a moment when that figure was placed directly across from Caitlyn, their faces superimposed by the glow of the screen. Eagle-eyed League of Legends fans should recognize that face as that of Kindred, the God of Death in the game’s universe.

Kindred is a dual entity, consisting of Lamb – a gentle guide who seems to release those who suffer from their misery and lead them to the next life – and Wolf, who pursues those who flee death and grants them a much more painful end. . The shape of the face and glowing eyes that appear over Caitlyn match Lamb’s mask very closely, and that light and dark color scheme also leaves little to the imagination.

This isn’t the first time Kindred has been mentioned in Arcane. In her first appearance, Mel’s mother Ambessa says that Mel’s brother “sees himself a fox among wolves,” but tells Mel that “if you want to survive in this world, you must learn to be both the fox and the wolf.” Ambessa – who was recently added to League of Legends alongside a series of cosmetic items indicating her attachment to the Cult of the Wolf (one of which was also given to Kindred) – doesn’t mention Lamb in that speech, but there’s no denying that In addition to Kindred’s split legs, her top half has a vulgar appearance that ties in nicely with the Fox/Wolf line.

Whether Ambessa has been speaking directly about Kindred this entire time is up for debate, but Arcane’s invocation of Kindred is about the most dangerous foreshadowing it can provide. There are fans who believe this is another reference to the mysterious Black Rose, but Caitlyn has essentially had nothing to do with that story until now. However, she is a character struggling with grief that drives her on an increasingly murderous journey after Jinx, who has already said she is at risk of “coming back in a box” without Vi’s help. After turning away from her partner at the end of episode three took an overconfident and controversial new position under Ambessaand since the Arcane showrunners have hinted that they aren’t afraid to kill off charactersThere’s every chance this could simply be a reflection of Caitlyn’s increasingly maddened grief, but I’m afraid this will likely spell doom for someone close to her.
