WASPI women receive update on support while awaiting compensation | Personal Finance | Finance

Campaigners from Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) have shared a positive update with the hundreds of thousands of women waiting for compensation worth up to almost £3,000 each. WASPI was created to help women born in the 1950s who have been negatively affected by the increase in the retirement age.

The women say their retirement plans have been thrown into chaos because the government failed to properly inform them that their state retirement age would increase by more than five years. WASPI says it is not opposed to equalization but “does not accept the unfair way in which our pension changes have been implemented with little or no notice”.

An ombudsman’s report published more than six months ago recommended that WASPI women receive compensation ranging from £1,000 to £2,950 each, and urged Parliament to “act quickly” in disbursing the funds. However, no compensation has yet been granted.

A post from the official WASPI A motion to support WASPI was unanimously backed at a West Northamptonshire Council meeting last week, according to the BBC, as tens of thousands of women in the area were among the millions affected.

Councilor Jonathan Harris, deputy leader of the West Northamptonshire Liberal Democrats, who proposed a motion to put pressure on the Government, said: “Women have had their emotional, physical and mental situation totally destroyed by a lack of reasonable notice . »

WASPI will hold a protest in Parliament Square on October 30, as new Labor chancellor Rachel Reeves presents her autumn budget. A post on WASPI’s social media reads: “WASPI women traditionally gather outside Parliament on these days, but this year we are asking all our supporters to go further.

“This is your opportunity to make your voice heard, as thousands of WASPI women renew their calls for fair and speedy compensation on Budget Day.”
