Pope Francis issued a new appeal for peace “on all fronts” during his Sunday prayer, during which he called for a day of prayer and fasting on Monday to mark the anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attacks.

“Brothers and sisters, tomorrow will be one year since the terrorist attack by Hamas against the people of Israel, to whom I renew my closeness,” the pope said. He continued:

Since that day, the Middle East has fallen into even greater suffering due to the destructive military actions that continue to strike the Palestinian people. Above all, they are innocent civilians, they must receive the necessary humanitarian aid.

He once again called for an “immediate ceasefire on all fronts”, including in Lebanon, adding:

Let us pray for the Lebanese people, especially those in the south forced to leave their villages.

Kamala HarrisAmerican vice-president and Democratic presidential candidate, spoke about her country’s relations with Israel during an interview that will be broadcast in full on Monday.

CBS has released a clip from the “60 Minutes” election special, which will air on the first anniversary of the Hamas terrorist attacks on southern Israel.

Harris was asked if the United States had any influence over the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, despite Washington providing Tel Aviv with billions of dollars in military aid and after the United States pressed Netanyahu to agree to a ceasefire.

Harris responded that U.S. military aid “allowed Israel to defend itself” against last week’s Iranian ballistic missile attack, which was “simply intended to attack Israelis and the people of Israel.” She added:

When we think about the threat posed by Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran, I think it is, without question, our imperative to do everything possible to enable Israel to defend itself against these kinds of attacks.

She said the United States is engaged in ongoing diplomatic efforts that “include the need for humanitarian assistance, the need to end this war, the need to reach an agreement that would release the hostages and create a cease-fire.” fire.” She added:

We will not stop exerting this pressure on Israel and the region, including Arab leaders.

40% of Lebanese students displaced by Israeli attacks (responsible)

About 40% of Lebanon’s 1.25 million students have been displaced by ongoing Israeli attacks, education director general says Imad Achkar said.

“There are 1.25 million students in Lebanese schools,” Achkar said, adding that “40 percent of them have been displaced” by Israeli bombing.

U.N. officials said Friday that most of Lebanon’s roughly 900 shelters were full and people fleeing Israeli military airstrikes were increasingly sleeping outside, on the streets or in public parks.

Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati said 1.2 million people – out of Lebanon’s total population of 5.49 million in 2022 (according to UN data) – were forced to leave their homes due to the intensification of Israel’s air and ground attacks.

The Lebanese government said earlier today that the start of the academic year would be postponed until November 4 due to “security risks” (see previous message at 11:13 a.m. for details).

Israel reiterated its call for the complete evacuation of northern Gaza.

Up to 300,000 people are estimated to remain in the heavily destroyed north after earlier Israeli warnings sent around a million people fleeing south, even though people say there is nowhere to go safe.

“We are in a new phase of the war,” the Israeli army said in leaflets dropped on the area, according to the Associated Press. “These areas are considered dangerous combat zones.”

Palestinians in northern Gaza have been asked to flee to al-Mawasi on the southern coast, a so-called “humanitarian zone” where around a million displaced people are sheltering. Mawasi, which has been the target of deadly Israeli airstrikes, is severely overcrowded and humanitarian agencies are struggling to provide even the most basic services.

In May, an aid worker described “horrible and dehumanizing” conditions to the Guardian, with limited food, dirty and scarce water, overwhelmed health facilities and almost non-existent sanitation.

Another said the coast was “totally congested, with one tent block after another and only narrow spaces between them.”

“There is no infrastructure inside the camps and, of course, the arrival of new supplies is very limited,” he said.
