Are the Patriots ready to start Drake Maye?

After the team’s 15-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins, it doesn’t appear the Patriots are committing to Jacoby Brissett.

Could rookie quarterback Drake Maye soon take over?

After hearing Jerod Mayo speak Monday morning, it seems like it’s a possibility as early as this weekend when the Patriots take on the Houston Texans. When asked to evaluate Brissett’s performance on Sunday, the Patriots coach gave a blunt assessment.

“It just wasn’t enough,” Mayo said. “I thought we played well enough defensively and on special teams to win the football game. As a quarterback, and he understands this, he touches the ball every play, and we didn’t win the game or score enough points to win the game. I think he would echo the same sentiment, that it wasn’t good enough.

Brissett completed 18 of 34 passes for 160 yards against Miami. After scoring 26 total points in the first two weeks, the Patriots have scored 26 points in the last three games. The team has averaged less than 9 points per game over the past three weeks. They are averaging 12.4 points per game this season.

There were problems on the offensive line. The Patriots have allowed sacks on 13.29% of their pass attempts. That’s the third-highest mark in the NFL. However, there have been issues where Brissett holds the ball too long and misses open receivers. The veteran completed 58.5 percent of his passes and threw for 696 yards for two touchdowns and an interception in five games for the 1-4 Patriots.

Brissett is 27th in the NFL in passing yards and 32nd in passing touchdowns. He was also sacked the third most often (17) in the league.

As of Monday morning, Mayo did not commit to making Brissett its starter. He gave a vague answer when asked if he would discuss Maye’s departure this weekend with his coaching staff.

“When I meet with the coaches today, it’s about the fact that we’re in a solutions-driven business and we’re not playing good football,” Mayo said. “We have to look at every unit and every player and figure out how we use this roster to go out on the field and win games.”

The Patriots are grooming Maye to take over at some point. As part of their developmental game, the No. 3 overall pick took 30 percent of the starting reps in practice. The team opted to sit him behind the veteran to allow him to learn in his first NFL season.

Across the league, three teams began drafting quarterbacks and those situations allowed young passers to improve. No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass in his first two games. The Chicago Bears are now 2-1 over the last three weeks as Williams has thrown five touchdowns. In Denver, Bo Nix threw four interceptions in his first two games. He has three touchdown passes and two rushing touchdowns over the past three weeks as the Broncos are riding a three-game winning streak.

Washington’s Jayden Daniels has been the most consistent rookie quarterback. He didn’t throw a touchdown in his first two NFL games. Over the past three weeks, he has thrown for six total touchdowns (four passing and two rushing) as the Commanders are 4-1 on the season.

Mayo said he was careful.

“I watched those guys on film. I would say that every situation is unique and so is our situation. I think you hit him in the head, those guys, it was a little bumpy at first, Jayden Daniels aside,” Mayo said. “But these guys are playing at a high level. It’s natural for fans and media to say, “Well, we also have a good quarterback waiting in the wings,” but at the same time, our mentality is how do we develop him? How to develop the guys on the field around him? And move forward from there.
