Increasing awareness and community acceptance of individuals with special needs is the core mission of local nonprofit Facing Autism, Inc..

The group was founded in 2014 as an initiative of parents who wanted to improve the lives of their children and the entire community. According to co-director of Facing Autism, Janel Lincoln, by gathering information “They found that not only was the community lacking services, but families dealing with autism also needed support, socialization and hope.”

Facing Autism officially became a nonprofit in 2018 and has since expanded to include advocacy for all individuals.

“As a parent of a child with special needs, our Facing Autism family has been invaluable to us,” said Lincoln. “It has opened up opportunities for us and our son Dylan to be more involved in the community and build relationships. It is wonderful to be able to relax and enjoy activities together in a safe environment. We are so grateful to everyone who supports this mission.”

One way the Facing Autism board of directors, consisting of Lincoln, Brian Lincoln, Allison Drew, Michelle Hammersland, Desirae Weaver and Amanda Holmes, supports individuals and families with special needs is through socialization and monthly events specifically aimed at serving the special needs community. .

Past events include swim parties, bowling, ice skating, drumming and painting in the park, and even a special needs prom.

“We also work with area companies to offer events and keep costs low for participants,” said Lincoln.

On Friday, Facing Autism will host another family-friendly event, a Christmas Trivia Night and silent auction. The proceeds will “support the continued efforts of nonprofit organizations to provide services to individuals with special needs and their families,” said Lincoln.

The event will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1436 21st Ave. N., with the silent auction beginning at 6 p.m. and trivia night following at 7 p.m.

“Gather your friends, six per team, for some friendly competition and a chance to win prizes while supporting individuals with special needs,” said Lincoln.

Donations to the silent auction can still be made by contacting a board member or emailing [email protected]

“Everyone is welcome at our events,” said Lincoln. “However, they are specifically designed for people with special needs. We also involve family and caregivers of the person with special needs. There is no age restriction.”

The family-friendly Christmas Trivia Night event and silent auction fundraiser are open to the public and no advance registration is required.
