Kupuna who survived the Maui wildfires offered affordable housing

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Housing assistance is on the way for Kupuna survivors of the Maui wildfires.

The nonprofit J. Walter Cameron Center is launching Na Hale Kupuna (NHK), an affordable housing project funded by Maui County’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and the federal CARES Act.

NHK offers seven long-term condominium units in West, Central and South Maui.

One and two-bedroom apartments will be available for households of up to five people.

To qualify, the primary applicant must be at least 62 years old and can demonstrate that their primary residence in Lahaina was damaged beyond repair during the August 8, 2023 wildfires.

Households must also have a combined gross annual income of 80 percent or less of the Area Median Income (AMI), as determined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

The rent is capped at 30% of the household’s gross income

One-bedroom units start from $300 per month.

Two-bedroom units start at $400/month.

The rental agreements are fixed at twelve months, with an option to extend.

Some units allow pets and service animals; all units accept registered assistance dogs.

Tenants are responsible for utilities not included in rent, and a security deposit equal to one month’s rent is required. Additional pet deposits may apply, with the exception of registered service animals.

The registration window runs from Tuesday, December 3 to Friday, December 20.

Application submission appointments must be made in advance by calling (808) 244-5546 or scheduling online at https://jwcameroncenter.org.
